Your Steps to Weekly In-Off ice Spore Testing
Step 1: Prepare & Run the Spore Test
Prepare BI: With clean, gloved hands, take one ProEdge Biological Indicator (BI) and write today’s date and sterilizer name on the label.
Place BI in Sterilizer: When the BI is in a sterilization pouch, place it in the most challenging area for steam to reach (front, bottom, or near door).
Run Cycle: Run the test in a fully-loaded chamber on a normal sterilization cycle (NOT a dry or quick cycle).
Cool Down: After the drying cycle finishes, allow the test BI to remain in the chamber for 5 minutes. Repeat steps 1-4 for each of your sterilizers.
Set Control Aside: Keep one unprocessed BI (with the same lot # as your test BIs) to use as a control.
Step 2: Power On Incubator
Plug in your ProEdge Incubator and fl ip the power switch on the back to the ON position. The display will show “System Testing.” It is ready when it reads “Stopped.”
Note: Your Incubator should always be powered down when not in use for testing.
Step 3: Activate & Incubate BIs
Activate (Crush) BIs: Each BI contains a glass ampoule. Place each BI, one at a time, into the crusher slot on the incubator and gently tilt until you hear a soft “pop.”
The purple fluid should now surround the spore strip that’s inside. Repeat for each additional BI including the control.
Incubate: Place all activated BIs into the incubator wells for the preset 24-hour cycle.
Note: If the cycle is interrupted, discard the test and start over with a new BI.
Step 4: Log Results in the ProEdge Clear™ Dashboard
Access Dashboard: After the 24-hour cycle, log in to your Clear™ dashboard.
Read Results: Note each BI color. Your dashboard will interpret the results for you.
Purple = Pass (sterilization successful)
Yellow = Fail (sterilization failed)
Note: Control BI should always turn yellow to mimic an unsuccessful sterilization cycle.
Record: Use the dropdown menu in Clear™ to enter your test results and confirm they are saved. Optional: upload a photo of the BIs for your records.
Step 5: Dispose of BIs
Test BIs: BIs that passed through a sterilizer can be disposed of in the regular trash. Dispose of positive BIs based on state regulations.
Control BIs: Unsterilized control BIs should be placed directly into your office’s biowaste container. If you do not have a biowaste receptacle, they must be run through a full sterilization cycle prior to trash disposal.
